The focus of the support is on:

  • helping young creative artists become more professional
  • developing the project visions of young creative artists who want to bring about social or environmental change
  • promoting collaborative working methods and artistic creation in groups

During the four-month Sparx studio period, the supported groups receive:

  • individual coaching
  • networking opportunities at the Studio Days
  • meetings with experts
  • a personal grant of CHF 6,500
  • a social security contribution of around 12% of the funding amount
  • a contribution towards materials for idea development
  • covering mobility costs to Studio Days

Sparx's support can be tailored to benefit the project vision. There is no requirement to produce finished products. The groups are free to decide for themselves how and where they work.

Studio Days

The Studio days are a key component of Sparx's support. They take place over the four-month Studio period and enable all participants to meet on a regular basis. The days are held at various locations throughout Switzerland, with Sparx covering the cost of board and lodging. The Studio days offer an opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow grant recipients, hone ideas, get feedback and input from experts and take part in workshops on various topics.

2026 Studio period dates

Studio kick-off: 5-7 p.m. on 25 March 2026

Studio days 1 & 2: 11–12 April 2026 (with an overnight stay)

Studio days 3 & 4: 30–31 May 2026 (with an overnight stay)

Coaching and Expert Meetings

Professional coaching will be provided during the four-month Studio period. This helps to structure the development process, provides further information and drives forward the development of project visions and personal professionalisation. The coaching takes place over four months and is an integral part of the programme.

In addition to the coaching sessions, participants can also get to meet the experts of their choice. These meetings are financed by Sparx. The meetings with experts offer an opportunity to develop project visions further at a content level.

Grant and social security

Sparx grants provide the time and financial freedom needed to focus on developing the submitted project vision. Combined with the coaching and discussions with experts, the financial support creates optimal conditions for the ideation process. As part of the support, 12% of the value of the grant is paid into a private pension account. Half of the money (6%) is deducted from the grant and the other half is paid directly by Sparx. The grant itself is paid out in two instalments. Two-thirds are paid at the beginning of the Studio period and the final third at the end.

The financial support for Sparx Studio comprises a number of components:

  1. A personal grant of CHF 6500
  2. A contribution to personal social security. As part of the grant, 12% of the value of the grant is paid into a pension account. Half of this (6%) is deducted from the grant and the other half is paid in additionally and directly by Sparx
  3. One contribution per group towards the materials needed to develop the idea
  4. Assumption of the travel costs to the Studio days by public transport

FAQ

Grant

Why does Sparx pay CHF 6500 per person?

The contribution of 6,500 is intended to enable you to devote sufficient time to developing your idea. It is a lump sum grant that may not be used for the production of the project vision.

How does Sparx contribute to social security?

CHF 390 (6%) of the personal grant of CHF 6500 is transferred directly into the participant's pension account at the end of the Studio period. Sparx will also pay a further CHF 390 into the account. In this way, Sparx supports participants in building up their social security.

Application form

How should I outline my project vision on the application form?

Applicants must answer three project-specific questions and submit a budget for their project. Together, this constitutes the core of your application. All of the key information about the submitted project vision should be described in the application. Your answers to the questions form the basis for the selection procedure and the only information presented to the selection committee for its final decision.

If you are unsure what to write, you are welcome to attend a writing support session, in which we can help you formulate your idea.

What additional documents do I need to submit?

The application form contains a number of questions about the project vision and the participating people. The following documents must be submitted together with the application form:

  • Personal project example: All applicants should submit an example of a past project. These can be projects that were particular significant in the development of your artistic or cultural activity or that are related to the submitted idea.
  • CV: Your CV should highlight the most important stages of your artistic or cultural work. It should show the extent to which applicants are on the path to becoming artistically or culturally professional.

You can also submit a project visualisation, showing your inspiration, although this is optional. These materials will only be considered in the pre-selection phase. The selection committee will only receive and make their final selection based on the anonymised content of the text fields on the application form.

Why do I have to submit a budget?

The budget should list the costs incurred during the development process (e.g. research materials or travel expenses). Sparx supports this process with a contribution of around 500.- per group. During the studio period, the contribution is determined individually for each group after consultation.

Why are the applications anonymized (only) after pre-selection?

During the internal pre-selection process, we must check whether the conditions for participation are met and applicants can indeed benefit from funding. However, the project vision should take centre stage in the final external selection by the selection committee, and all project visions should have the same chance. That's why we anonymise the applications for this step.

Project vision

Who is invited to submit their ideas?

Sparx supports young creative professionals in their professional development. If you submit an idea as a group, the idea must originate from you and not from third parties or institutions.

What ideas will not be funded by Sparx?

Sparx does not support projects that...

  • Fail to fulfil all the conditions of participation;
  • Discriminate against people;
  • Are developed within an institutional framework (training run by external individuals or institutions);
  • Have a commercial focus;
  • Go beyond the ideation phase in the planning stage;
  • Serve to establish an office or other infrastructure;
  • Focus on the development of apps or websites;
  • Involve only the fields of photography, design or architecture;
  • Have already been supported by other Migros Culture Percentage funding programmes;
  • Are initiated by people who have already been funded by Sparx Studio.
Can we submit a project that we have already received funding for?

We are looking for project visions with a potential for development, not completed concepts. If this applies to your project, it may be submitted even if it already receives other funding. However, in this case, you must state on the application form from whom and for what you have already received funding.

Can my project vision be part of a project I am working on/have worked on at my school/university?

In general, people enrolled at art college can't submit applications to Sparx. Further work on a thesis is possible only under two specific conditions:

  • The thesis has already been submitted and graded; and
  • The idea behind it will be fundamentally developed further.
What types of project visions is Sparx looking for?

The project idea should address social issues. You can find more information here.

What is taken into account in the selection process?

Sparx is looking for projects:

  • Submitted by groups of people who all fulfil the conditions of participation;
  • Submitted by groups of people who are just starting their personal professionalisation and can equally gain valuable experience for their further development from the support.
  • That describe a project vision in a comprehensible and structured way;
  • Involving a project vision that is still in the early stages of its development and will not yet be in the production phase during the Sparx Studio period.
  • The content of which aims to have a positive impact in the aforementioned socially relevant areas;
  • For which the motivation for participating in Sparx Studio is clearly recognisable;
  • That communicate who the group members are and how they collaborate.

Sparx Studio

What exactly happens during Sparx Studio?

You can find more information about Sparx Studio here.

How much time will be spent working during the Sparx Studio period?

The Studio period lasts four months. This time can be used differently by each group and is orientated towards the process of developing the project vision. In general, a development must be visible at the end of the four-month Studio period. How you organise this time is up to you. If, when applying, you already know that you won't have any time during the Studio period, why not give your place to someone who can benefit more from it?

Can we start implementing our project vision before the Studio period?

The focus of the Studio period is to support you in realising your project vision. You should therefore still be in the early stages of implementation. You can make initial preparations for the Studio period in advance, but the idea itself must remain the same as the one you submitted. The form can be modified by agreement, but the basic thematic orientation and the objective must remain unchanged.

Not all members of the group can take part in the Studio days. Can we submit a project vision nonetheless?

The Studio days are an integral part of our support. All grant recipients should attend these meetings

I live with a disability and/or a chronic illness and rely on assistance or additional information. What should I do?

Get in touch with us so we can find a solution that’s right for you.

Terms and conditions of participation

What does "resident in Switzerland" mean?

To participate in Sparx, you need to be living and have an account in Switzerland from the moment you apply until the end of the studio period. Swiss citizenship is not required.

I'm not a member of a group. Can I submit an idea on my own?

Individuals can't apply for Sparx Studio because Studio time will only be made available to groups of two or more people.

A member of our group is currently enrolled at an art college. Can we submit our project vision nonetheless?

No. Sparx is only open to people who aren't currently studying at an art college.

Not all the members of my group are young creative artists. Does that exclude us from receiving funding?

Yes. Sparx promotes the professionalisation of young creative artists. Every member of a group must therefore fulfil the conditions of participation.

How big can my group be?

Groups of between two and a maximum of four people can benefit from the Studio time.

I have already submitted a project vision to Migros Culture Percentage Sparx before. Can I reapply?

People who have already funding from Migros Culture Percentage Sparx can't reapply directly through the call for ideas. All those who haven't received support (but have applied) are always free to submit new project visions.

Do we need to be professional artists?

The Migros Culture Percentage Sparx programme is aimed at up-and-coming creative artists and cultural workers who would like to be active culturally in the longer term. You don't need to identify as a professional creative artist yet, but should aim to become one.

What do we mean by "professionalisation"?

Sparx understands professionalisation as a process. To be perceived as “professional”, various skills and external factors are required. Sparx distinguishes between artistic and administrative skills, networking and positioning within a cultural scene. Sparx funding builds on existing artistic and administrative skills during the studio period. If you want to further professionalise yourself in the areas of self-organisation, social security and networking, Migros Culture Percentage Sparx funding is the right choice for you.
